Using SketchUp, I was able to quickly design ideas of how my pavilion could mimic the features of a butterfly through architecture. These are a few designs that I worked out by using repetition and curvilinear lines. This project had a large focus on how as a designer we can take one object and create an abstract representation of it.
the final model
Inspired by the biomimicry of a butterfly, The Nook pavilion is a visual representation of the patterns and forms seen in the insect. Defined by linear direction, repetition, and rhythm - the space has become unified through the symmetrical balance. The shape of the structure in whole resembles a singular wing on a butterfly but also functions greatly for the design and provides room for shade and sunlight to beam through. Facing north towards the entrance you can visualize the patterns that are commonly seen in butterflies as well. In doing this, harmony and unity have been achieved through the use of planes that display balance. My intent for the structure was to simplify the geometric shapes in a butterfly as well as create a space that resembled a cocoon, a part of the life cycle. As light shines in from all angles, the enclosed space gives shade as well and can occupy multiple people who would like to visit. The name “The Nook” came from the idea of a cocoon as well as the concept it would be constructed for a library.

Using the grid design in the artwork I created partis (seen below) to formulate a floor plan that is a visual conception of the lines seen in it.
